The easiest thing to do is go online to do some important research and two hours later find yourself browsing websites on the latest celebrity gossip or soap opera plots. However, this is unlikely to lead you to a successful career. It is time to stop wasting valuable time and start working smarter and faster. Follow our six simple steps towards achieving a smarter and more time efficient future.

1. Time management.
It is highly important to prioritise your time and stick to these prioritisations. Managing your time not only allows you to spend specific periods of time on each task, it also allows you to become more organized.

Some suggested ideas to prioritising your tasks are shown below:
 
  • Create a schedule based on a short list of time priorities.
  • Allocate realistic targets in regards to time spent on each priority. Don’t allocate a three-hour slot to a task that you can only devote utter concentration of an hour. Be realistic!
  • Take regular reviews to this schedule. This allows you to prioritise and become up to date more effectively.
  • Make sure you set aside some uninterrupted time where you can devote total concentration to the task at hand.
  • Tackle tasks which are more important and urgent first, then move down the list.
2. Concentrate.
  • The fewer priorities you focus on at once, the more efficient you will become.
  • Try to devote your concentration to the task at hand.
  • Do not try to do more than one task at a time, complete one and then move on.
3. Avoid procrastination.
It is easy to be distracted from tasks that involve concentration. It is more difficult to display dedication to the task by avoiding procrastination.

  • Deal with difficult tasks first whilst your energy levels are up. Don’t leave them to last; they will only become more difficult and time-consuming. Confront them!
  • Organize your papers and files once, don’t waste time repeating the process.
  • Although listening to music helps some, it is damaging to others. Find out what is most appropriate for you. Find out the things that help you avoid procrastinating.
4. Plan ahead.
It is always beneficial to plan and prioritise tasks ahead of time, whether it is a day or a week in advance. Remember, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.
5. Stay calm.
There are always minor crisis situations that can distract you. Try not to abandon the task at hand for every such crisis. Analyse their significance and predicted impact. The key is to prioritise them along with everything else.
6. Relax and stay healthy.
  • It is important to work hard and concentrate; however maintaining your health through regular exercise and time for relaxation is also highly beneficial.
  • Don’t let your work stress you out. Take regular breaks where you can be yourself. Try not to think of the burdens of work during these times.
